Canola

field09_150Canola is the number one source of farm cash receipts in Canada totaling $7.3 billion in 2014. The canola sector contributes $19.3 billion annually to Canada’s economy and creates over 249,000 jobs.

The industry includes 43,000 farmers and 14 processing plants in 6 provinces. Most of the economic benefits of canola stay in western Canada where the majority of canola is grown but canola processing in Ontario, Quebec and the Maritimes is worth an impressive $1.3 billion.

Canadian canola exports were valued at $9.1 billion a year in 2014. Canada is now the second largest producer of canola after the EU and the largest canola exporter in the world. More than 90% of Canada’s canola production is exported. Exports take the form of canola oil, seed (which is crushed for oil) and meal (which is used for high protein livestock feed). Seed is the most valuable export (57% of exports), followed by oil (27%) and meal (15%).
